In Ghana there used to be a familiar slogan on the lorries ‘No Condition is Permanent.’ In the early 1990s someone wrote ‘could we ever imagine a time like this when the Communist Party was legal in South Africa but illegal in Russia?’ That is the kind of seismic shift that has taken place with the overwhelming vote in the Irish Referendum to legalise same sex marriage. It gives great hope to many of us in the Iona Community who have long campaigned for equal rights. Sadly those of us in the Church of Scotland have seen the recent General Assembly taking a step backwards (after going a step forwards) and we need once again in the Community to challenge what is still the national church in Scotland not to fall behind civilised societies that enable their citizens to be themselves without fear. The Leader of the Community’s speech to the General Assembly embodied that.
