The Prime Minister will call on Parliament to support UK airstrikes against ISIS in Syria. The Iona Community believes that the case for bombing has not been made.
An uprising against dictatorship has become a brutal proxy war between regional sectarian factions driven by global geo-politics. Since 2011 the United Nations estimates that 250,000 people have been killed in Syria and 4m people registered as refugees. There have been nearly 3000 airstrikes by the United States, Russia and now France – more bombing is not the answer.
The Iona Community, as a Christian organisation committed to seeking peace with justice, calls on Parliament not to send bombers to Syria, and instead to place the United Kingdom at the heart of non-violent, diplomatic ways of resolving the many conflicts in the region.
