Camas Centre is piloting a tree themed working programme during their Public Autumn work week, which we are calling ‘The Gathering’. hazelpic

The pilot seeks to look at an inclusive and fun experience of connecting with nature, through the gathering hazelnuts of local provenance, to grow at a tree nursery we are seeking to establish.

W are seeking five individuals to join some of the Camas team in foraging seed from some beautiful and less trod wooded areas that belong to the Ross of Mull.  During the week, we will also visit nearby Tioran community forest, home to sea eagles and a host of other life as well as the regeneration area near Erraid known as Tireragan.  One or two nights, weather permitting, will be spent under canvas and by the campfire at a choice wild camp or two.  Meals, accommodation and evening activities will otherwise take place at Camas; with the other members of the work week.

The aim will be to offer another tree themed week in the Spring months which will involve planting the sprouting nuts into modules and growing on in modules for planting.  Successive autumn events, we hope will involve planting the modular trees into bundles for winter/Spring plantings as well as foraging nuts for the following season.

As many will know, Argyll & Bute is proud to boast the remnants of a once flourishing Atlantic Rainforest,  with multi-stemmed hazel being part of its climax vegetation.  Hazel, has been an important source of protein for thousands of years, and caches of roasted shells have been found in archaeological digs throughout the region.  Hazel is a deeply embedded part of our Celtic cultural & ecological inheritance, ready for reclaiming, and is host to a broad range of mosses, lichens, liverworts and bryophytes.   Camas is seeking to do its part in furthering its continuation for the benefit of present and future generations; as well as a way of establishing meaningful links with crofters and organisations seeking to plant trees on Mull and surrounding areas.
