The Iona Community recently received this news from the Prior of Taizé. Brother Thomas was formerly a member of the Iona Community before joining the Taizé Community, and always retained an interest in and links with our own Community. We give thanks for his many years of faithful commitment to the common life of the gospel. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

From the Taizé Community:

Last night, Brother Thomas entered the life of eternity. After a long illness, he had been growing progressively weaker in recent days.

Ian Williamson was born and brought up in Dunfermline (Scotland). He graduated from the University of Edinburgh 1960, and continued his studies at New College, training for ministry in the Church of Scotland. For two years he acted as a student assistant at Craigsbank Parish Church, Corstorphine. He became a member of the dispersed Iona Community in June 1963. He then served as an Assistant Minister for two years in a church in Dundee. Already planning to join the Taizé Community, it was during his work there that, at Brother Roger’s request, he was ordained as a minister.

He entered the Community in 1965 taking the name of Thomas. He accompanied very many people in their stays at Taizé as volunteers, or during a week spent in silent retreat. For many years he was also the brother who acted as a link for those of the Community who lived in ‘fraternities’ in other parts of the world.

The funeral Eucharist will be at midday (12:00) Tuesday, 15 January, in the Church of the Reconciliation, Taizé.

With our most cordial greetings from Taizé

Brother Alois,

Prior of Taizé
