We will be dialoguing with what surrounds us and what is already deep within us\, waiting to be freed.   Decolonising your faith will open new spaces for rewriting your own story. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\nExperience a special Holy Week on Iona\, where the land and sea scape will become our context for reconnecting with the events of Holy Week. \nDrawing on the idea of ‘Outside Holiness’ as explored by former Iona Community leaders\, in the prayers of George MacLeod and in the poetry of Kathy Galloway\, we’ll connect different locations across Iona with the events of Holy Week. \nThrough guided island pilgrimages\, reflective walking and sitting\, and outdoor worship\, we’ll discover how this ‘thin place’ opens us afresh to the story of service\, betrayal\, crucifixion and resurrection. \nJoin us as we explore the meanings of Easter within the walls of the Abbey and along the paths of holiness we shall discover in the wilder places of the island and of our hearts. \nProgramme facilitators\n\nCraig has been coming to Iona for over 25 years\, making many of those visits with his wife Meredith and their children Niamh and Euan. He is a Baptist Minister and College tutor in Wales\, and has been a member of the Iona Community for 15 years. In 2018 he published book based partly on his experiences of the Community\, Melodies of a New Monasticism: Bonhoeffer’s Vision & Iona’s Witness. In 2021\, he\, along with Wendy Lloyd\, helped lead the events of Holy Week on Iona\, and is very much looking forward to returning in 2026. \n  \n  \n\nWendy Lloyd has lived on the Isle of Mull since 2018\, where she runs a croft with her husband Jon. A qualified Mountain Leader\, she guides pilgrims on Mull and Iona through her project\, Mull Another Way and serves on the board of the Scottish Pilgrim Routes Forum. Wendy also works with both the Iona Community and the Guild of Health and St. Raphael. You will have the chance to seek out the secret places of Iona that so many visitors never encounter. We will then use our imagination to write the stories of those places in the comfort of Iona Abbey. \nIf you are someone who enjoys walking and spending time in nature\, but also love curling up with a good book and a steaming mug of tea\, then Writing the Island is for you. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\nIf you have never gardened\, but would love to try\, or if you are a beginner and want to garden more sustainably\, at the same time broadening your actions for how you can have less of an impact on our planet through your daily living\, then this week is for you. \nTouching the soil and working with the miracle of plants reconnects us with our environment and creator and encourages us to admire\, appreciate and fall in love with them more.  \nThere will be hands on sessions in the Abbey and/ or community gardens with the exchanging of practical advice and soaking in of the amazing views. You’ll have the chance to learn about composting\, propagating\, the principles of “right plant\, right place” and organic practices.  \nClassroom sessions will include sustainable practices in the garden and other aspects of our daily lives.  \nProgramme leader \n\n\n \n\nTerry Over is an experienced gardener and has pursued organic and sustainable gardening methods for twenty years. He’s trained on the job at two formal gardens and also works in the energy & water sector. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n\nEmbody Lent 5th – 11th April 2025 \n\nAre you curious about how Christian spirituality intersects with yoga?  \nPauline Steenbergen\, Steve Carter and Una Bentley will lead your exploration during the fifth week of Lent. Indoor and outdoor practices will be based on the book\, Embody Lent in 29 Yoga Postures at different times of day. \nEach yoga practice will begin with grounding and slow breathing and will end with time for stillness\, meditation\, prayer or relaxation. We’ll be paying attention to each other throughout the week as equals\, subjects rather than objects. We will examine ways to cultivate body\, mind and breath awareness. And we will find more unity with others\, the earth\, all living things and the Divine source of every breath. The programme will include one group reflection about the Eastern origins of yoga and ways in which practising yoga can lead into deeper ecumenical and interfaith encounters towards peace work. \n‘My faith is anchored in the belief that God is the Breath of life. I feel ‘yoked’ to God’s presence when simply I take the time to become conscious of my breath in and my breath out.‘ Pauline Steenbergen  \nAll faiths and no-faith participants are welcome. No previous experience of yoga is required. But we can cater for those who would like to stay for 3 nights.\nThree-night breaks begin on 29th March and 1st April. \n\nHow might seeing with the eyes of an island help us to view the world differently?   \nCombining mindful creative activities with the rich visual history of Iona – from the Book of Kells to the present day – Iona artist\, Mhairi Killin\, and island mindfulness teacher\, Kerstin Felleiter\, will help us explore a Gaelic way of seeing and being in the world.  \nThis artist-led introduction to Iona’s creative wellspring\, explores how thinking like an island – through its culture\, landscapes and community – might support us to navigate the complexities of modern life. We’ll interweave art\, spirituality and community with the inspiration and imagination cultivated by the island’s stunning land and seascapes.   \nLed by Iocal artist Mhairi Killin and supported by Kerstin Felleiter\, the week will include illustrated talks\, conversations\, mindful observation\, and short\, guided meditations. These activities will lead to the creation of an individual metal artefact\, in the tradition of medieval pilgrim badges\, reflecting each participants’ island experience. No artistic skills or previous mindfulness experience required\, just bring an openness to observe and play.   \nNote there will be a limited number of 25 places for this programmed week. \nProgramme leaders   \n\nMhairi Killin is a multidisciplinary artist who has lived on Iona since 1997. Trained at the Glasgow School of Art and a Royal Scottish Academician\, Mhairi’s practice strives to reveal islands as progressive centres from which we can experience a unique perspective on the forces shaping our futures. Mhairi’s family stretch back many generations on Iona\, and she continues the centuries old tradition of metal working on the island through her business\, Aosdàna.  \nKerstin Felleiter is a certified mindfulness teacher and has been teaching a regular class on Iona for residents and visitors since 2022\, alongside teaching online and writing a blog. She is inspired by the wisdom and beauty of various spiritual traditions – especially those from the East\, where she has spent several months. Kerstin strongly believes in the healing power of sharing and connection.
