SUMMARY:Queer Joy: Identity\, Faith and Ritual
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]For queer Christians\, faith and spirituality are central components of our identity. There is also a growing number of queer folk who are interested in exploring spirituality but don’t quite know where to start. \nQueer Joy offers an opportunity to share stories\, experiences and reflections of LGBTQ+ and queer lived experience while also exploring a deeper experience of faith and the Divine\, leaving with a positive understanding of queer joy. \nThroughout the week\, there will be workshops which include individual\, group and creative experiences. These will enable personal reflection and consideration of our relationship with God and one another. \nYou will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of creative activities such as crafting\, journaling\, poetry/prayer writing\, Lego and queer mandalas. \nYou will also be able to create an individual plan of activities that you can take home with you and use on your own or in your communities. \nThis programme is open to all\, whether you identify on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum or beyond\, whether you’re queer or questioning\, whether you are new to exploring faith or have done so for decades. Allies and friends to the community are very welcome! \nPlease note that we will adopt an anti-oppressive and inclusive approach throughout the programme. \n  \nProgramme Leaders \n \nMaxwell Reay is a gender queer trans man. He has been clergy in Metropolitan Community Church since 1993. He volunteered with MCC Bath\, MCC North London and MCC Edinburgh. He served as an Elder in MCC from 2021 to 2024. He was a Healthcare Chaplain in the NHS for 18 years. These days\, he leads “Our Tribe”\, the LGBTQI+ ministry at Augustine United Church\, Edinburgh. This is a joint ministry with The United Reformed Church and MCC. \nLewis Reay is a queer trans man who lives with his husband of 30 plus years. He is a liturgist and has been published in the United Reformed Prayer Handbook for several years. He writes prayers for use in worship services as well as for a variety of personal and community activities. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]We do not draw close to The Mystery that is called “God” through systematic theology\, well-defined dogmas\, or doctrinal statements; we do so by paying attention to the reality around us. \nGod is everywhere but until we learn to see God somewhere we will not notice God anywhere. The beauty of Iona\, the generosity and kindness of those who live and work here\, and a curiosity and openness to give and receive from fellow travellers will help us to pause and wait for the work of God to transform rather than inform us. \nIf you are looking for ways to find space for contemplation and stillness\, but have no idea where to start\, this week is for you. We will be learning from mystics old and modern and play with different ways of entering stillness and quiet. Walking a labyrinth\, journalling\, using art and poetry\, body movement and music – you will have the chance to try all of these. \nHildegard of Bingen said\, “A human being is a vessel that God has built for Godself and filled with inspiration so that God’s works are perfected in it.” Our hope is that as we bring our whole selves\, body\, mind and spirit\, to practices ancient and new we will find ourselves belonging\, flourishing\, becoming more contemplative\, more fully human\, more able to live as followers of Jesus\, The Way. \n  \nProgramme Leaders \nAli and Ralph are both experienced spiritual accompaniers. They met whilst working on Iona some years ago and find that the vagaries of ordinary life are teaching them to find God in what past mystics have sometimes called the dazzling darkness. SUMMARY:Refuge and the Resistance of Joy

The structures of violence historically have produced phobia and fear and been turned into systems of hate and exclusion. \nJoin us this week to look at the resources and creative practices communities can adopt which declare a different reality to one built on fear and instead declare that peace is with us. \nLeading through stories of sanctuary\, poetry\, arts and drama and their own resources of survival\, the team hopes to enable you to leave Iona having found peace\, and a sanctuary. We hope you will continue your journey empowered to work joyfully for justice and with tenacity\, humour and practical care. \n  \nProgramme Leader \n \nAlison Phipps is UNESCO Chair for Refugee Integration through Education\, Languages and Arts at the University of Glasgow where she is Professor of Languages and Intercultural Studies and a Member of the Iona Community for 25 years. \n  \n  \n  \n \nDr Tawona Sitholé is Lecturer in Creative Practice Education within the UNESCO Chair in Refugee Integration through Education\, Languages and the Arts. In research and teaching he is part of CLIP (Culture\, Literacies\, Inclusion and Pedagogy). \n  \n  \n‘Better known as Ganyamatope (my ancestral family name) my heritage inspires me to make connections with other people through creativity\, and the natural outlook to learn. Educated by assigned teachers through the schooling system\, and by natural teachers through ‘pasichigare’ (my ancestors lifestyle)\, I benefit from having more than one way of knowing/learning. As a result\, I find myself playing many roles in creativity and education. I am a poet\, playwright\, storyteller and musician.’ \n  \n \nDr Hyab Yohannes is a Lecturer in Forced Migration and Decolonial Education with the UNESCO Chair RIELA at the University of Glasgow. Hyab’s research interests include poetics\, decoloniality\, and political theories across physical\, onto-epistemic\, spatio-temporal\, and juridico-political dimensions. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]As young adults\, we find ourselves the inheritors of powerful and complex histories. However\, the conflicting stories often feel more overwhelming than useful. It can feel like we’ve come of age in an era that fails to provide positive visions of the future\, making us feel powerless in the present. At best\, this outlook is uninspiring. At worst\, it’s paralysing. But there is an alternative. \nIn this rich and eclectic week\, we will explore the radical power of imagination to provide both hope in the present and embodied change in the future. There will be opportunities to learn about ongoing positive projects\, and to share in meaningful conversation. Guests will also be invited to engage creatively through a series of workshops. \nAll are welcome: we want to create space for everyone to bring their different knowledge and skills\, so no particular experience is necessary. If you’re someone between the ages of 18 and 35 who likes the idea of meeting new people\, talking about big ideas and spending time in a remarkable setting\, we’d love for you to join us at Iona Abbey – itself rebuilt from ruins\, standing for hope. \n  \nProgramme Leaders \nGrace Pengelly is a writer\, editor and facilitator from Somerset\, UK. Previously a Commissioning Editor for HarperCollins\, she now works as an independent editor for authors and publishing houses. Fascinated by the intersections of culture\, politics\, art and faith\, she publishes essays on her newsletter\, The Murmuration. She regularly appears on podcasts\, in print and at festivals as a speaker. Grace has two small children and lives in Somerset. \n  \n  \nIndigo Maynard Watts is a writer and artist from Gloucestershire\, with a particular interest in the political and spiritual nuances of British counterculture. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Calling all children and young people and their parents\, grandparents\, godparents and other important adults in their lives: \nCome and join us for our families week\, a programme designed for families of all shapes and sizes! \nYou’ll be living in an ancient abbey on a remote and beautiful island full of exciting plants and wildlife. We’ll have lots of time to explore the island\, to have fun and play games together\, to work on craft projects at the big refectory tables\, to join in daily task teams to keep the Abbey running\, and to be a part of our worship services. \nEach family will be allocated their own room or rooms (i.e. a family of 4 might be accommodated in one room with 4 beds\, or in two rooms with 2 beds in each). Where more than one room is required we will ensure the rooms are close to one another. We have 2 rooms which can sleep 4 people\, and 3 rooms which can sleep 3 people. SUMMARY:Seabirds\, Sundew and the Spirit
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]From corncrakes to gannets\, from marsh orchids to sea ferns and from seals to the increasingly rare heath snail\, summer on Iona provides plenty of look out for. In the course of this week we will be exploring different habitats and using our observational skills as we combine bird watching with plant hunting in search of the island’s fascinating wildlife. In our sessions we will be learning not just how to recognise the birds and plants but some of the stories behind them\, including their folklore. We will using all this as we explore a spirituality of the environment based on attentiveness and awareness and a reciprocal relationship with the earth. We will look at how this is manifested in various cultures and how we can develop a contemporary approach that combines past tradition with present experience in order to help us confront the current environmental crisis. \n  \nProgramme Leader \n  \nBob Gilbert is an environmental writer and broadcaster\, his books include ‘The Green London Way\, ‘The Missing Musk‘ and ‘Ghost Trees’. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Following Joanna Macy’s ‘Work That Reconnects’ framework\, this week offers the opportunity to engage with three stories of our time: Business as Usual\, The Great Unraveling and the Great Turning. \nThroughout the week\, we will learn about and move along a “Spiral Journey”\, beginning with Gratitude\, followed by Honouring our Pain for the World\, Seeing Things with New Eyes and Going Forth with Renewed Energy. \nMoving through the Spiral is a practice that can be repeated whenever we feel frustrated or stuck in a world of ongoing and increasing suffering and injustice\, the climate crisis being our focal point. \nThe programme will give us a number of tools and practices that we can take into our own lives and use whenever there is a need for renewed hope. There will be guided meditations\, group exchanges\, and a variety of creative practices\, including an easy-to-learn dance. \nMost of the programme will take place indoors\, but we will also make use of the beautiful surroundings to help us to relate to our environment in a holistic way\, an integral part of the place and interwoven in the fabric of creation. \n  \nProgramme Leaders \n  \n\nMonica Mueller-Roemer is a retired system analyst and project manager. These days\, she leads and organises Spiritual Retreats in the Anglican/Episcopal Church. She is a member of the Climate and Creation Care Ministry in the Episcopal Church in Europe and a Member of the Iona Community. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Praying in Flesh and Bone aims to widen our understanding and practice of prayer through paying attention to the physical body. \nDuring this week\, we will learn how the body accompanies us in prayer through preparation (breath work)\, setting intentions (for reflection)\, focus (centering images and gestures)\, expression (movement)\, and anticipation (gestures of invitation). \nWe will explore how attention to the body enhances our ability to pray within our faith tradition with openness to all others. In conversation and exploration\, we will attend to how the body can support prayers that invite us to: hold\, heal\, and hope. \nThe human body\, individually and in community\, will become a rich medium for connecting to God\, our inner self\, others\, and creation. \nSome mobility (e.g. ability to transition between standing and sitting) is required\, but we will offer accommodations for ranges of ability. \n  \nProgramme Leader \nMiriam Y. Perkins\, Ph.D.\, is Professor of Theology at Emmanuel Christian Seminary teaching graduate courses in residence and online. Those who cannot keep up are left behind. \nThrough movement\, reflection and conversation\, we’ll explore what it means to live well in a complex and unequal world. Led by Palestinian dancer and writer Nada Shawa and movement facilitator Catherine Wright\, this movement retreat combines dance\, storytelling and shared reflection to explore themes of justice\, belonging and human connection. \nNo previous dance experience is required. No previous dance experience is required. \nSet against the landscape of Iona\, the week offers opportunities to move\, reflect\, learn and connect in ways that support both personal growth and collective understanding. \n\n\n\n\nMeet the Programme Leaders\n\n\n\n\nNada Shawa is a Palestinian dancer and writer from Gaza. Born with Cerebral Palsy\, she was schooled and treated for her condition when she came to Scotland\, without her family at the age of eight. Nada was unable to return to Palestine due to the dangererous situation under the Israeli occupation. She graduated from the University of Edinburgh with an honours degree. She has been invited to perform at multiple solidarity fundraisers. Nada has performed widely dance and her own written material at multiple International arts festivals\, including the Edinburgh International Festival\, the Scottish International Storytelling Festival\, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, and the Edinburgh International Book Festival. She explores themes of belonging\, memory\, and political consciousness\, bringing a nuanced perspective to conversations around diaspora and cross-cultural experience. \n  \n\n \nCatherine Wright has a Ph.D in the philosophy of mind. She taught philosophy in both the USA and in Scotland. In the 1990’s she found Conscious Dance as a spiritual practice and path. Since then\, she has qualified as a teacher and facilitator in Movement Medicine. She says\, “The wisdom we can access through our bodies has woven itself into everything I do. In all of my work and study\, my intention is to more fully understand myself and our shared humanity.” She enjoys working as a coach\, mentor and supervisor of dancers\, dance teachers\, and OneSpirit ministers.
