DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\nWe live in times of turmoil – wars\, climate change\, poverty\, the pushing back of democracy. Times where religion itself is being idolatrously abused to serve power\, just as Christ himself was tempted: “All these kingdoms can be yours….”   \nAlice Walker said\, “Resistance is the secret of possessing joy.” From where might such joy resurge? The Celtic saints knew. They understood – as do some of today’s great theologians like Walter Wink and Walter Brueggemann – the deep imagination\, both our own and that of God.  \nThrough talks\, walks and a shared common life this week Alastair McIntosh will explore the imagination and action across three themes. Re-membering what has been dismembered\, what has brought us both individually and collectively to where we are now. Re-visioning how spiritual hope can renew our lives and the world. And Re-claiming spiritual skills\, especially those of prophetic vision\, action and discernment.  \nLike the nuns and monks of St Coumba’s time\, what might we learn from a week in community with one another\, with God and with nature? What might we take back out to the world\, perhaps in “new ways found to touch the hearts of all”?  \nWe’ll explore through talks from Alastair\, and walks\, and sharing in the common life at Iona Abbey. Whether you are an experienced writer or exploring writing for the first time\, this week is for you. \nYou’ll get the opportunity to workshop with writers from different backgrounds and genres\, to find out more about different creative processes\, and to find your own literary voice along the way. \nThere will also be plenty of time to enjoy hearty meals form the Iona Abbey Kitchen\, explore the rugged and wild island landscape\, tell stories by the fireside\, and share in the love of words as a community – written\, read and spoken. \nFestival Contributors\n\nLamorna Ash  \nLamorna Ash is an author and journalist based in London. Her first book\, Dark Salt Clear\, was shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize in 2020 and won the Somerset Maugham prize in 2021. Her second book\, Don’t Forget We’re Here Forever\, came out in May 2025\, and was a Telegraph and GQ Book of the Year.  \n  \n  \nMargaret Elphinstone \nMargaret Elphinstone is the author of Lost People (Wild Goose 2005)\, a novella offering hope and redemption in a time of war and desolation. Lost People was shortlisted for the 2024 Saltire fiction award. Margaret is the author of nine earlier novels\, including The Gathering Night\, Voyageurs and the award-winning Sea Road. [She has worked as an organic gardener and an academic and is Emerita Professor of writing at Strathclyde University.]  Her poetry collection will be published by Wild Goose during 2026. She lives in Galloway.  \n  \n \nNiamh Ní Mhaoileoin \nNiamh Ní Mhaoileoin is an Irish writer based in Edinburgh. Her debut novel\, Ordinary Saints\, was published in April 2025. SUMMARY:Politics\, Power and Protest
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\n\nThe late Archbishop Desmond Tutu once famously observed\, “When people say that religion and politics don’t mix\, I wonder which Bible it is they are reading.” Engagement with politics is one vital way that Christians can live out the commandment to love our neighbours\, seek justice and peace\, and pursue God’s kingdom.  \nThis can daunting\, dangerous or a diversion when the political world is often shouty and toxic and there seems little common ground. Yet this is a time when we need politics – and good people willing to serve in public life – to rise to the many complex long-term challenges facing us locally\, nationally and globally. \nWe’ll spend some time exploring the relationship between faith and politics\, and looking at lessons from the Bible and history about different ways of engaging with power and politics – from protest to participation. \nWe’ll hear about the reality of life as a politician\, and how some church communities have been able to build purposeful relationships with MPs\, modelling an approach to politics characterised by listening\, kindness and truthfulness. \nThroughout we will have opportunities to reflect on our own experience\, context\, power and calling\, and how we might use them to further the causes we believe in. \nProgramme facilitators \nSimeon Mitchell leads the Joint Public Issues Team\, which helps the Baptist\, Methodist and United Reformed Churches\, and the Church of Scotland\, to work together for justice and peace. He is a Methodist\, living in Oxford\, with a background is in international development. \n  \n  \n\n  \n  \n\nRevd. Steve Tinning is a Baptist minister and serves as the Baptist Union’s Public Issues Enabler and as a member of the Joint Public Issues Team. This week is led by Stephen Wright a member of the Iona Community. It is intended for those who are comfortable with deep spiritual inquiry and ready to go deeper along that particular Way known as contemplation. Stephen will offer an insight into the Heartfulness nature of contemplation\, how to be open to it\, and how to live the contemplative Way in all the gifts and challenges of our everyday lives. \nOur time here will centre around an intensive engagement with contemplative practices. There will be daily periods of group work\, reflection and conversation\, combined with long periods of solitude\, silence and stillness. Both will aid the inner prayerful and reflective journey that supports our longing for relationship in the One in whom ‘we live and move and have our being’. \nWe will be further nurtured by the sacred presence of Iona Abbey and its community\, the elemental beauty of this special island and its long history of attentiveness to the sacred. \nThere will also be moments of grounding our insights by helping with the everyday tasks of living in community. The deep inner life does not have to be separate from the outer. \nShared expectations and practicalities\nMost meals and interim activities will be taken in quiet\, but there will be opportunities\, for those who wish\, to enjoy social time and conversation.  \nAccommodation will be offered as single occupancy rooms at Iona Abbey. Private time is an essential component of this programme. However\, we can offer room sharing if you wish to bring a close friend or partner also wishing to join the course. \n\n\nFacilitator\nLed by Stephen Wright\, this programme will draw upon the collaborative work of the Sacred Space Foundation and the Diocese of Carlisle in the St. Kentigern School and Community for Contemplatives. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]We live in a world where human rights are deliberately dismantled for monetary gains\, a world increasingly reliant on technology and targeted algorithms which distance us from our humanity\, a world in which powerful people accumulate wealth and resources for their personal gain only. Those who cannot keep up are left behind. \nHow do we move in a world like that? How can we move differently? How can we cultivate empathy and justice\, equality and connection with nature\, faith in the world\, and each other? \nThrough the medium of dance\, we will explore how movement can be a medicine for our humanity\, how it can help us discover freedom\, and how it connects us to our community and our environment. \nProgramme leaders Nada and Catherine will interweave elements of movement with the story of the indigenous people of Palestine. Nada will draw from her own family history and deep connection to Palestine. Catherine and Nada both believe that movement and dance can help us find a way to live well in a complex world. Nada says: “When I dance\, it instantly brings me a feeling of equality\, without the barriers that comes with having a disability\, as well as the freedom from the oppressive nature of being colonised and oppressed as a Palestinian.” \nWhether you are an experienced dancer or think you have two left feet\, this programme is designed to be accessible for all. Come and join us to explore how justice and movement connect in a week of joyful community and deep connection. \n  \nProgramme Leaders \n \nNada Shawa is a Palestinian dancer and writer from Gaza. Born with Cerebral Palsy\, she was schooled and treated for her condition when she came to Scotland\, without her family at the age of eight. Nada was unable to return to Palestine due to the dangererous situation under the Israeli occupation. She graduated from the University of Edinburgh with an honours degree. She has been invited to perform at multiple solidarity fundraisers. Nada has performed widely dance and her own written material at multiple International arts festivals\, including the Edinburgh International Festival\, the Scottish International Storytelling Festival\, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, and the Edinburgh International Book Festival. She explores themes of belonging\, memory\, and political consciousness\, bringing a nuanced perspective to conversations around diaspora and cross-cultural experience. \n  \n \nCatherine Wright has a Ph.D in the philosophy of mind. She taught philosophy in both the USA and in Scotland. In the 1990’s she found Conscious Dance as a spiritual practice and path. Since then\, she has qualified as a teacher and facilitator in Movement Medicine. She says\, “The wisdom we can access through our bodies has woven itself into everything I do. In all of my work and study\, my intention is to more fully understand myself and our shared humanity.” She enjoys working as a coach\, mentor and supervisor of dancers\, dance teachers\, and OneSpirit ministers. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Praying in Flesh and Bone aims to widen our understanding and practice of prayer through paying attention to the physical body. \nDuring this week\, we will learn how the body accompanies us in prayer through preparation (breath work)\, setting intentions (for reflection)\, focus (centering images and gestures)\, expression (movement)\, and anticipation (gestures of invitation). \nWe will explore how attention to the body enhances our ability to pray within our faith tradition with openness to all others. In conversation and exploration\, we will attend to how the body can support prayers that invite us to: hold\, heal\, and hope. \nThe human body\, individually and in community\, will become a rich medium for connecting to God\, our inner self\, others\, and creation. \nSome mobility (e.g. ability to transition between standing and sitting) is required\, but we will offer accommodations for ranges of ability. \n  \nProgramme Leader \nMiriam Y. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Following Joanna Macy’s ‘Work That Reconnects’ framework\, this week offers the opportunity to engage with three stories of our time: Business as Usual\, The Great Unraveling and the Great Turning. \nThroughout the week\, we will learn about and move along a “Spiral Journey”\, beginning with Gratitude\, followed by Honouring our Pain for the World\, Seeing Things with New Eyes and Going Forth with Renewed Energy. \nMoving through the Spiral is a practice that can be repeated whenever we feel frustrated or stuck in a world of ongoing and increasing suffering and injustice\, the climate crisis being our focal point. \nThe programme will give us a number of tools and practices that we can take into our own lives and use whenever there is a need for renewed hope. There will be guided meditations\, group exchanges\, and a variety of creative practices\, including an easy-to-learn dance. \nMost of the programme will take place indoors\, but we will also make use of the beautiful surroundings to help us to relate to our environment in a holistic way\, an integral part of the place and interwoven in the fabric of creation. \n  \nProgramme Leader \n  \nMonica Mueller-Roemer is a retired system analyst and project manager. These days\, she leads and organises Spiritual Retreats in the Anglican/Episcopal Church. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]From corncrakes to gannets\, from marsh orchids to sea ferns and from seals to the increasingly rare heath snail\, summer on Iona provides plenty of look out for. In the course of this week we will be exploring different habitats and using our observational skills as we combine bird watching with plant hunting in search of the island’s fascinating wildlife. In our sessions we will be learning not just how to recognise the birds and plants but some of the stories behind them\, including their folklore. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Calling all children and young people and their parents\, grandparents\, godparents and other important adults in their lives: \nCome and join us for our families week\, a programme designed for families of all shapes and sizes! \nYou’ll be living in an ancient abbey on a remote and beautiful island full of exciting plants and wildlife. We’ll have lots of time to explore the island\, to have fun and play games together\, to work on craft projects at the big refectory tables\, to join in daily task teams to keep the Abbey running\, and to be a part of our worship services. \nEach family will be allocated their own room or rooms (i.e. a family of 4 might be accommodated in one room with 4 beds\, or in two rooms with 2 beds in each). Where more than one room is required we will ensure the rooms are close to one another. We have 2 rooms which can sleep 4 people\, and 3 rooms which can sleep 3 people. However\, the conflicting stories often feel more overwhelming than useful. It can feel like we’ve come of age in an era that fails to provide positive visions of the future\, making us feel powerless in the present. At best\, this outlook is uninspiring. At worst\, it’s paralysing. But there is an alternative. \nIn this rich and eclectic week\, we will explore the radical power of imagination to provide both hope in the present and embodied change in the future. There will be opportunities to learn about ongoing positive projects\, and to share in meaningful conversation. Guests will also be invited to engage creatively through a series of workshops. \nAll are welcome: we want to create space for everyone to bring their different knowledge and skills\, so no particular experience is necessary. If you’re someone between the ages of 18 and 35 who likes the idea of meeting new people\, talking about big ideas and spending time in a remarkable setting\, we’d love for you to join us at Iona Abbey – itself rebuilt from ruins\, standing for hope. \n  \nProgramme Leaders \nGrace Pengelly is a writer\, editor and facilitator from Somerset\, UK. Previously a Commissioning Editor for HarperCollins\, she now works as an independent editor for authors and publishing houses. Fascinated by the intersections of culture\, politics\, art and faith\, she publishes essays on her newsletter\, The Murmuration. She regularly appears on podcasts\, in print and at festivals as a speaker. Grace has two small children and lives in Somerset. \n  \n  \nIndigo Maynard Watts is a writer and artist from Gloucestershire\, with a particular interest in the political and spiritual nuances of British counterculture.
