SUMMARY:John Bell - Towards A World Fit For Our Children (FULLY BOOKED)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Towards A World Fit For Our Children\, 3rd–9th May 2025 (FULLY BOOKED) \n(WAITING LIST: please contact ionaabbeybookings@iona.org.uk to add your name.) \n\nHow can we\, as individuals and as churches\, think positively about the future when so much news and conjecture is bleak? And how can we do that without retreating into pious platitudes\, but with realism\, hope and some biblical insight?  \nJoan Bakewell\, the veteran BBC journalist\, spoke recently of how for her\, as a teenager in the post war area\, the future was full of potentials and delight. In comparison\, she found it difficult to conjecture how a teenager might feel today when considering future prospects given the uncertainties in the world\, and the increase in mental health issues among the young.  \nPeople of faith are called to dream dreams and see visions rather than become complaintive and despondent. And enthusiasm is best encouraged by dialogue rather than introspection. \nIn this retreat\, we will be considering whether a faith which should essentially be liberating can offer constructive insights and positive pathways to the future.  \nProgramme leader \n\n \n\nJohn Bell is an ordained minister\, a member of the Iona Community and a writer and occasional broadcaster. He is a much-loved contributor at Greenbelt Festival. He teaches and lectures worldwide on issues of faith\, social justice\, music and liturgy. \n\n  \n  \n\nCosts \n\n6 Nights: £846.00 per adult\, £423.00 for reduced rate – see our programme page for more information.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”BOOK HERE” style=”custom” custom_background=”#568ea4″ custom_text=”#eae8e8″ link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fportal.freetobook.com%2Freservations%3Fw_id%3D43736%26w_tkn%3DZ8ayvaEvw2SsrbCpGHLzeQZxQGqxQJy163aSHXVJnHbgCb53vffml4WKihlt5%26checkIn%3D2025-05-03%26stayLength%3D6″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Word made flesh – Celebrating the unity of body\, mind and spirit: 26th April – 2nd May 2025 \n\nWe’ve known for a long time that the body listens to the brain. Now we know what ancient spiritual practices intuited: that the brain listens to the body.  \nWe will explore the intimate relationship between the body and the brain by learning why body-based practices work and how different styles of meditation impact our well-being. And we’ll experience a variety of ways to honour and care for our whole selves. \nYou will acquire skills during this week which have wide-ranging implications for our relationships and for our ability to be present to ourselves\, God and the world. \nContributors \n\nChristopher Rowe – credit St Columba’s Church\n  \n\nRev Christopher Rowe is a Tai Chi instructor\, Capacitar facilitator\, Associate Member of the Iona Community and rector of Colston Milton Parish\, Glasgow. \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n\nKeller Hawkin – credit: Belmont University\n  \n\nRev Keller Hawkins is a therapist\, with degrees in religion\, theology\, and counselling. SUMMARY:Encounter Easter anew (6 nights)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Encounter Easter anew: 16th – 22nd April 2025 \nWhen we take wrath and sacrifice out of the picture\, how do we see Easter?   \nThe story of Jesus’ death on the cross is central to Christianity but\, for many\, the traditional interpretation of the sacrifice and bodily resurrection of Jesus have become stumbling blocks. In this journey through the events of Holy Week we will explore together the power of those events through a different lens.   \nThis is a journey – through led conversations and creative arts. We will reflect on different perspectives of why Jesus died\, and the transformational possibilities of resurrection in our lives and in the world today. Worship will be intrinsic to our shared experience.   \nThere will be programme for children and young people too and times for all to come together and share. \nProgramme leaders\n \n \nAlison Adam is a member of the Iona Community\, has worked in primary schools\, youth work\, with the Wild Goose Resource Group\, where she contributed to much published and recorded material. She currently works part time in a charity shop. \n  \n  \n  \n \nLesley Orr is a historian and activist for gender and social justice\, and an honorary fellow of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues\, University of Edinburgh. SUMMARY:Embody Lent (limited availability)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n\nEmbody Lent 5th – 11th April 2025 \n\nAre you curious about how Christian spirituality intersects with yoga?  \nPauline Steenbergen\, Steve Carter and Una Bentley will lead your exploration during the fifth week of Lent. Indoor and outdoor practices will be based on the book\, Embody Lent in 29 Yoga Postures at different times of day. \nEach yoga practice will begin with grounding and slow breathing and will end with time for stillness\, meditation\, prayer or relaxation. We’ll be paying attention to each other throughout the week as equals\, subjects rather than objects. We will examine ways to cultivate body\, mind and breath awareness. And we will find more unity with others\, the earth\, all living things and the Divine source of every breath. The programme will include one group reflection about the Eastern origins of yoga and ways in which practising yoga can lead into deeper ecumenical and interfaith encounters towards peace work. \n‘My faith is anchored in the belief that God is the Breath of life. I feel ‘yoked’ to God’s presence when simply I take the time to become conscious of my breath in and my breath out.‘ Pauline Steenbergen  \nAll faiths and no-faith participants are welcome. No previous experience of yoga is required. Seated and gentle options will be included so that people of various abilities can participate. \nProgramme leaders \nPauline Steenbergen is a new Member of lona Community (2024-6)\, a Church of Scotland minister\, former hospice chaplain\, spiritual director\, Yoga Scotland teacher and author. \n  \n  \n \n\n\n\n\nSteve Carter is a retired Anglican priest\, former South American Mission partner and police chaplain. \n\n\n  \n  \n  \nUna Bentley fell in love with yoga in the 80s\, and has been teaching it since 2010\, to people of all shapes\, ages and abilities. She works with traveller children\, and co-leads a weekly meditation service for her local Anglican Church.  \n  \n  \nCosts \n  \n6 Nights: £846.00 per adult\, £423.00 for reduced rate – see our programme page for more information.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”BOOK HERE” style=”custom” custom_background=”#568ea4″ custom_text=”#eae8e8″ link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fportal.freetobook.com%2Freservations%3Fw_id%3D43736%26w_tkn%3DZ8ayvaEvw2SsrbCpGHLzeQZxQGqxQJy163aSHXVJnHbgCb53vffml4WKihlt5%26checkIn%3D2025-04-05%26stayLength%3D6″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Ways of Seeing\, Ways of Being 3 or 6 nights
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Ways of Seeing\, Ways of Being\, 29th March – 4th April 2025 \nThis wonderful programme will run over 6 nights. But we can cater for those who would like to stay for 3 nights.\nThree-night breaks begin on 29th March and 1st April. \n\nHow might seeing with the eyes of an island help us to view the world differently?   \nCombining mindful creative activities with the rich visual history of Iona – from the Book of Kells to the present day – Iona artist\, Mhairi Killin\, and island mindfulness teacher\, Kerstin Felleiter\, will help us explore a Gaelic way of seeing and being in the world.  \nThis artist-led introduction to Iona’s creative wellspring\, explores how thinking like an island – through its culture\, landscapes and community – might support us to navigate the complexities of modern life. We’ll interweave art\, spirituality and community with the inspiration and imagination cultivated by the island’s stunning land and seascapes.   \nLed by Iocal artist Mhairi Killin and supported by Kerstin Felleiter\, the week will include illustrated talks\, conversations\, mindful observation\, and short\, guided meditations. These activities will lead to the creation of an individual metal artefact\, in the tradition of medieval pilgrim badges\, reflecting each participants’ island experience. No artistic skills or previous mindfulness experience required\, just bring an openness to observe and play.   \nNote there will be a limited number of 25 places for this programmed week. \nProgramme leaders   \n\nMhairi Killin is a multidisciplinary artist who has lived on Iona since 1997. Trained at the Glasgow School of Art and a Royal Scottish Academician\, Mhairi’s practice strives to reveal islands as progressive centres from which we can experience a unique perspective on the forces shaping our futures. Mhairi’s family stretch back many generations on Iona\, and she continues the centuries old tradition of metal working on the island through her business\, Aosdàna.  \nKerstin Felleiter is a certified mindfulness teacher and has been teaching a regular class on Iona for residents and visitors since 2022\, alongside teaching online and writing a blog. She is inspired by the wisdom and beauty of various spiritual traditions – especially those from the East\, where she has spent several months. Kerstin strongly believes in the healing power of sharing and connection. Her aim is to create safe spaces for people of all backgrounds to come together and to support the development of meaningful\, respectful exchanges and learning from each other.  \nCosts \n6 Nights: £846.00 per adult\, £423.00 for reduced rate – see our programme page for more information.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”BOOK HERE” style=”custom” custom_background=”#568ea4″ custom_text=”#eae8e8″ link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fportal.freetobook.com%2Freservations%3Fw_id%3D43736%26w_tkn%3DZ8ayvaEvw2SsrbCpGHLzeQZxQGqxQJy163aSHXVJnHbgCb53vffml4WKihlt5%26checkIn%3D2025-03-29%26stayLength%3D6″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]\nTo find out more about 3 night stays during this week\, please contact IonaAbbeyBookings@iona.org.uk

SUMMARY:Pilgrimage of life (FULLY BOOKED)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\nImage credit: Sara Bain \nPilgrimage of life 5th – 11th October 2024 \n\nA week to explore our lives as pilgrimage\, deepening our resources to face climate change with Alastair McIntosh. \nClimate change is the most pressing physical problem that the whole world currently faces. But what are its deeper roots? Is it sufficient to face it at the conventional levels of science\, politics and economics\, or does it also require insights into the human condition that only deep psychology and a profound spirituality can offer? \nThe Russian writer Maxim Gorky said “All of us are pilgrims on this earth. I have even heard it said that the earth itself is a pilgrim in the heavens.” How does ecological theology help to understand this\, and  how might an understanding of our own lives as pilgrims help to inform\, and to sustain\, the vocations called for from us in these times? \nAbove all\, however\, how can we not let these times go to waste\, but to let God use them to deepen our own spirituality and\, perhaps\, that of the world on its pilgrimage through time? During this week we will reflect together on the words of both a former Iona Abbey warden and in the experience of the Columban monks that Saint Adomnan recorded: “Yea\, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death”? \n \nFacilitator\nAlastair McIntosh is a human ecologist whose work connects the social and environmental problems of the world to a call for spiritual deepening. He lives in Govan from where George MacLeod founded the Iona Community. Alastair is a founding trustee of the GalGael Trust that builds community in hard-pressed social contexts\, an honorary professor in the School of Education at the University of Glasgow and the author of a dozen books. The books most pertinent to this week are Parables of Northern Seed: Soil and Soul: People versus Corporate Power (Aurum 2001)\, Hell and High Water: Climate Change\, Hope and the Human Condition (Birinn 2008)\, Poacher’s Pilgrimage: a Journey Through Land and Soul (Birlinn 2016) and Riders on the Storm: The Climate Crisis and the Survival of Being (Birlinn 2020). \n\n\nCosts\n6 Nights: £762 per adult\, £381 for reduced rate – see our programme page for more information.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”BOOK HERE” style=”custom” custom_background=”#568ea4″ custom_text=”#eae8e8″ link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fportal.freetobook.com%2Freservations%3Fw_id%3D43736%26w_tkn%3DZ8ayvaEvw2SsrbCpGHLzeQZxQGqxQJy163aSHXVJnHbgCb53vffml4WKihlt5%26checkIn%3D2024-10-05%26stayLength%3D6″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Nurture the land - Autumn
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\nNurture and be nurtured \nCome and help prepare our organic garden and polytunnels for the season ahead while taking part in community life here at Camas. In keeping with the tradition of the Highlands and Islands\, we grow produce on a system of lazy beds – long ridges divided by drainage ditches.   \nThese beds are improved and enriched by using the seaweed from the bay on our doorstep. Join us for the start of the growing season when we will be getting these beds up and running\, sowing seeds for the year ahead. In addition\, we have two polytunnels we hope to fill with colour and life for the months to come. Alongside sowing and growing\, there will be plenty of hands-on tasks around the garden: fixing up beds\, borders and compost-bins\, and being creative with willow cut from the garden.   \nNo gardening experience is necessary\, this will be the chance to learn\, share ideas and leave your mark at Camas. If you enjoy getting your hands dirty\, evenings by the fireside\, simple community living\, all in the breathtaking Ross of Mull\, then Nurture the Land Week is for you. \nThis week is led by Camas Staff.  \nA week at Camas includes:\nNature Connection: Immerse yourself in the stunning natural beauty of the Isle of Mull by walking down the track to Camas and waking up right on the shore of beautiful Camas bay each morning. \nAdventure Activities: Dive into exhilarating outdoor activities including kayaking\, abseiling\, coasteering\, wild camping and hiking. \nFireside Gatherings: Evenings filled with storytelling\, games\, music\, and laughter\, fostering bonds and creating lasting memories. \nStargazing: Lose yourself in the beauty of the night sky on the Camas lawn\, offering a chance for reflection and perspective. \nBuilding relationships: Share insights and ideas\, participate in activities and share in community life at Camas as we cook\, clean and work together. \nCost and how to book?\nThis week is offered at the discounted rate of £210 or £105 concession. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”BOOK HERE” style=”custom” custom_text=”#666666″ link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fportal.freetobook.com%2Freservations%3Fw_id%3D44378%26w_tkn%3D1xcVKLXsIdJpjgijWqZqWw4SvaN42c8vGHCckW1hUwdvFHEbzpf3JfHrjBYc3%26checkIn%3D2024-03-25%26stayLength%3D5″ el_class=”tealbtn generalbtn leftbtn”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:The Miracles Unboxed - John Bell (FULLY BOOKED)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n\nThe miracles unboxed with John Bell 21st – 27th September 2024.  (FULLY BOOKED) \n\nThe miracle stories in the Bible are that section of the Gospels to which the least attention is paid. It may be that contemporary believers are cyncial about them or believe that in time science or anthropology will explain them away. But there are thirty one of them\, and no two are the same; and if you removed them from Mark’s Gospel\, it would be an even smaller book than it is presently. \nFor a number of years\, John Bell has been exploring these stories with people of different ages and attitudes\, and is convinced that we should stop looking for ‘the right answer’ and instead consider how human experience can unlock in them profound spiritual and moral insights which are waiting to be unveiled. \n\nFor a number of years\, John Bell has been exploring these stories with people of different ages and attitudes\, and is convinced that we should stop looking for ‘the right answer’ and instead consider how human experience can unlock in them profound spiritual and moral insights which are waiting to be unveiled. \nCosts \n\n6 Nights: £762 per adult\, £381 for reduced rate – see our programme page for more information.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”BOOK HERE” style=”custom” custom_background=”#568ea4″ custom_text=”#eae8e8″ link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fportal.freetobook.com%2Freservations%3Fw_id%3D43736%26w_tkn%3DZ8ayvaEvw2SsrbCpGHLzeQZxQGqxQJy163aSHXVJnHbgCb53vffml4WKihlt5%26checkIn%3D2024-09-21%26stayLength%3D6″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]
