INFORMATION ON AND DUTIES OF COMMITTEES

COUNCIL

The Council is responsible for, on behalf of Members, the planning and execution of the policy of the Community, and for the administration, management and control of the affairs and property of the Community, and generally MAY exercise powers on behalf of the Community; subject nevertheless to the provisions of the Company’s Act 2006 or the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the Iona Community and to such regulations as may be prescribed by the Community in Plenary meeting.

In particular, the Council has direct responsibility for:

  • the relationship of the Community with its Members, Associates and Friends
  • relationship of the Community with external bodies
  • overall financial matters including approval of the annual report and accounts The Leader acts as the Council’s Chief Executive Officer.

It is anticipated that Council will meet in full at least 4 four times in each year.

Members of Council serve a period of four years and assume the responsibilities of Company Directors.
All Other Committee Convenors are ex officio full Members of Council and Company Directors

IONA COMMITTEE

The Iona Committee is responsible to Council for the work of the Iona Community on Iona.

  • for the deployment, , of the Community’s islands’ resources
  • for recommending to the COUNCIL the annual income and expenditure budget for the Community’s work on Iona and the subsequent monitoring and control of same
  • for recommending to the COUNCIL the staffing establishment and the terms and conditions of employment for staff working on Iona.

The Iona Committee is served by the Leader, the Island Centres Director and the Support Services Manager.

COMMUNICATION & FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

The Communication and Fundraising Committee is responsible to Council for:

  • the development and implementation of a communication strategy to effectively promote the vision and concerns of the Iona Community in order to influence wider society and generate financial support for our work.
  • the coordination and publication, in the name of The Iona Community, of all material commissioned or otherwise, promoting or reflecting the concerns of the Community and its members including but not limited to: programmes, brochures, website, e-communication, Coracle and annual report.
  • coordinating and maximising opportunities for income generation through committed giving; legacies; project grants; campaigns; appeals or self-generated social enterprise.
  • recommending the annual income and expenditure budget for communication and fundraising including Wild Goose Publications and committed giving, and the subsequent monitoring and control of same.
  • recommending the staffing establishment and the terms and conditions of employment of the staff engaged specifically in communications or fundraising including Wild Goose Publications.

It is anticipated that the committee will meet between 2 and 4 times a year and set up working groups to deal with specific projects. The Communications and Fundraising Committee is served by the Leader, Coracle Editor, Publications Manager OR member of WGP Marketing staff, Islands Centres representative, Support Services Manager.

PROGRAMME COMMITTEE

The Programme Committee is responsible to Council:

  • for the following aspects of the Community’s work out with Iona and Mull;
  • for the promotion and enabling of outreach projects,
  • for over viewing the work of the working groups “associated with the Community’s areas of concern”,
  • for the general administration and support services of the Community for the deployment, together with the Iona & Camas Committees, of the Community’s mainland and islands’ resources
  • for recommending to the COUNCIL the annual income and expenditure budget for the Community’s work out with Iona and Mull, with the exception of Wild Goose Publications, and the subsequent monitoring and control of same
  • for recommending to the COUNCIL the staffing establishment and the terms and conditions of employment for staff out with Iona and Mull, with the exception of Wild Goose Publication staff.

The Programme Committee is served by the Leader, the Support Services Manager and the Outreach staff.

It is anticipated that the Committee will meet about four times per year at times and locations determined by the members of the Committee.

CAMAS COMMITTEE

The Camas Committee is responsible to Council:

  • for the work of the Iona Community at Camas.
  • for recommending to the COUNCIL the annual income and expenditure budget for the Community’s work at Camas and the subsequent monitoring and control of same.
  • for recommending to the COUNCIL the staffing establishment and the terms and conditions of employment for staff working at Camas.

The Committee is served by the Leader, Camas Co-ordinator and the Support Services Manager and up to 4 co-opted people with particular interests in the purposes of Camas.

IONA COMMUNITY BOARD

The Iona Community Board is the body through which the Iona Community reports to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. It is made up partly of Iona Community Members appointed by the Community, of other Church of Scotland members appointed by the General Assembly though its Nominations Committee and of four representatives of other denominations represented in the current membership of the Community (currently Church of England, United Reformed Church, Roman Catholic Church and Scottish Quakers.). It is, by custom, chaired by an Iona Community Member appointed by the General Assembly.  It meets twice a year, around October and January, at the Church of Scotland offices in Edinburgh for approx. two hours. It receives a report from the Leader of the Community on the work of the year, and it authorises the report to the General Assembly.

NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE

The purpose of this committee is to ensure that a sufficient number of nominations are received at the AGM for the various Committee vacancies. The work is undertaken usually by telephone and e-mail in liaison with the Support Services Manager and Leader in the weeks leading up to the AGM.
