1997 was the 1400th anniversary of the death of St Columba, the Irish born saint who founded an Abbey on Iona and devoted his life to spreading the Christian message across Scotland. It was also the anniversary of St Augustine’s arrival in Kent. In recognition of this the Royal Mail released a series of stamps celebrating the two saints titled Missions of Faith. For exclusive use on Iona, a special cancellation was created showing St Columba and the Isle of Iona.

St Columba in a boat and St Columba on Iona, cancelled on St Columba day on the 1400th anniversary of his death.
