ABOUT THE COMMUNITY

The Iona Community is an international, ecumenical Christian movement working for justice and peace, the rebuilding of community and the renewal of worship.

Our Community was founded in Glasgow in 1938 by Rev George MacLeod. A visionary and a social reformer, MacLeod was driven by a belief that faith is grounded in action. In rebuilding the ruined accommodation at Iona Abbey, trainee ministers and unemployed workers lived, worked and worshipped together.

We are now about 280 Members and more than 2,000 Associate Members, Young Adults and Friends across the world. We remain true to that founding vision – sharing common work and community as we pursue justice and peace, in Scotland and beyond.

JOIN THE COMMUNITY

We believe in the transformational power of community to change lives and the world. Only in community can justice and love be done. We are part of the global church. Our Members are inspired by a shared commitment to Jesus Christ. We believe that work for justice, peace and an equitable society is a matter of urgency and that we have a responsibility to live in a right relationship with the whole of God’s creation.

We are a movement, a community and an organisation enabled by our Members, Associate Members, Young Adults, Friends, staff and others who work with us to advance the purpose of the Iona Community.

COMMUNITY WORSHIP

If you join the Iona Community in worship on Iona, you will find a pattern of daily worship that reflects our life together. At our Camas Centre on Mull you will find us reflecting on each day in simple, down-to-earth ways.

In our Family Groups and Regions, you will hear us sing, pray, rage and reflect on gospel and life, many of us with doubts and questions. Through our Prayer Circle you will meet our global members praying for peace and healing for individuals and nations

DAILY WORSHIP

Members record prayers, readings and songs for daily worship, following the pattern of worship at Iona Abbey. Join us through the link below.

ABBEY WORSHIP

Prayer is part of our commitment when living in community on Iona. Morning and evening, we pray, sing, reflect and hold stillness on themes of welcome, justice and peace, healing, commitment and the celebration of holy communion.

COMMON CONCERNS

Members of the Iona Community are committed to living out the Christian faith, where they are across the globe, in the areas of justice and peace. Members engage locally, nationally and internationally in political life and in the life of our churches and faith communities.

Members, Associate Members and Young Adult Group Members meet together to pray, reflect and and support one another in local Family Groups, and through the our Common Concern Networks (CCNs).

If you would like to join one or more of these CCNs visit our membership page to see if becoming an Associate Member of the Iona Community is right for you. Once you’ve joined our membership, you will be invited to join the CCNs.

RESOURCES

We draw together our training and learning resources under the Iona Learn banner. Our aim is to resource and equip people in working and praying for justice and peace. We do this through the ground-breaking work and witness of our Wild Goose Resource Group and through the wide-ranging issues published in books and e-bookes by Wild Goose Publications.
