Statement of solidarity with trans people

In solidarity with trans people

The Iona Community maintains fierce solidarity with all who are trans, including our members, staff and friends. We deplore any actions or words that undermine the fullness of humanity created by God. We applaud all moves to include, welcome, embrace and uphold the whole created order. Convener of our LGBTQIA+ Common Concern Network, Alex Clare-Young says this:

“In the context of culture war rhetoric, it is often difficult to separate the logic of a ruling from the frenzied media surrounding it. The Supreme Court ruling on sex and gender has led to confusion in government, in the media, and on social media and has fanned the fires of divisive culture wars. I lament the fact that trans kin now fear erasure from public life.

“The approach which will further safety and access to public life for all is to increase provision of safe, private, non-gendered facilities.

“In 2025, we still live in a world in which women are under-represented in many places of power. Trans women, and trans people more widely, even more so. We must work together to platform a wider range of voices so that all experiences and insights are included, valued, and drawn into dialogue.”

Passionate about justice for all

We long for a just and peaceful world in which all of life can flourish.  Our Members and Associates pursue peace and justice through our common concern networks. You can find out more about the work of these groups on our website.

You will find LGBTQIA+ resources, including liturgies and reflections written by our Members and staff, in our book shop.
