About the programme
The Festival of Writing and Storytelling is for anyone who loves stories. Whether you’re an experienced writer, an occasional journal keeper, an aspiring author or simply an enthusiastic reader, this week offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in creativity, imagination and the craft of storytelling.
This writing retreat brings together people from a wide range of backgrounds to explore how stories are created, shared and experienced. Through workshops, talks, discussions and readings, you’ll discover different creative approaches, develop your skills and gain fresh inspiration for your own writing and storytelling.
Designed to be welcoming and accessible, this creative writing retreat encourages curiosity and experimentation rather than perfection. You’ll have opportunities to learn from experienced writers, explore new ideas and connect with others who share a love of words, stories and creativity.
At its heart, the week celebrates the power of stories to connect people, inspire change and help us make sense of the world around us. Whether you’re working on a project, developing your confidence as a writer or simply looking for creative inspiration, you’ll find encouragement, community and plenty of opportunities to take part in this unique writing festival on Iona.
Meet the Programme Leader(s)
The Festival of Writing and Storytelling brings together a diverse group of writers, storytellers and creative practitioners who share a passion for words, ideas and imagination. Throughout the week, contributors will offer workshops, readings and conversations designed to inspire, encourage and challenge participants in their creative practice.
What to expect
Each day will include a mixture of workshops, talks, discussions and creative writing opportunities led by guest contributors and fellow participants. You’ll have the chance to explore different approaches to storytelling, develop your writing skills and experiment with new ideas in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Alongside structured sessions, there will be time for personal writing, reading, reflection and informal conversations with other participants. Fireside readings and storytelling events will provide opportunities to share work, listen to others and celebrate the power of stories in community.
As part of life at Iona Abbey, you’ll share meals, worship and community life, while also enjoying the beauty and inspiration of the island. This creative writing retreat is designed to be welcoming, stimulating and collaborative, offering space to learn, create and connect with others who share a love of stories and the written word.
