A monthly workshop course on music – its purpose and potential, how to use it imaginatively in congregations and much more.
Led by John L. Bell, Jane Bentley & Carol McArthur.
The course is open to all who are interested in the potential of music in the church – its importance in worship, pastoral work, and spirituality. Each evening is self-contained, so that participants may come for the whole course or specific evenings.
- Monday 2nd October: What is it about music?
An introductory evening about what music, particularly singing, does for human beings. - Monday 6th November: The Scottish Dimension
A whirlwind tour through triumphs and tragedies in church and out of it. - Mon 4th December: Children and Babies at the Breast
Making music with children, its importance for their emotional and social development, and its therapeutic value. - Mon 8th January: Music for Life
Exploring the songs and pieces of music which are permanently inside us. - Mon 5th February: Bang the Drum
The significance of rhythm, a sometimes forgotten element in music. - Mon 5th March: Music, Mind and Memory
The amazing ways in which music works when other communication fails. - Mon 2nd April: Please note we have moved the event previously scheduled for this date, to the following Monday, the 9th (see below).
- Mon 9th April: Songs of Separation
The importance of lament when life does not bring what we expect. - Mon 7th May: The Global Connection
Singable songs from every continent.
(Note: while most events are on the first Monday of the month, in January, the 8th is the second Monday, as is April 9th)
Course Leaders
John L. Bell teaches in the areas of worship and congregational song in every continent, avidly collects both good songs and good practice, and is a member of the Wild Goose Resource Group
Jane Bentley has a doctorate in musical interaction. She is involved in a government sponsored project on music and memory, was previously a cathedral chorister and drums all over the world.
Carol McArthur trained in music and psychology, and worked as a music therapist before qualifying in child psychotherapy. She is the musician in Gorbals Parish Church.
