A weekly opportunity to worship @ weeWONDERBOX

This session – 2018-19 – our monthly cycle of worship will follow a set of sequential themes that many who are familiar with the Iona Community will recognise:

  • Quiet Time
  • Prayers for Justice & Peace
  • Prayers for Healing
  • Act of Commitment

On months that have a fifth Wednesday, the liturgy’s theme will be freer and may pick up on another contemporary or appropriate issue.

We believe that all of life is worship, but that specific focused times together in prayer and praise and protest allow us to build up body, mind and soul, to be affirmed and comforted as well as challenged and changed.

We practise participative worship which characteristically tends to use unaccompanied song, music, conversation and simple symbolic action to explore how the Word, our experience and lives intersect.

Each liturgy is led variously by the Iona Community Programme Worker, the Wild Goose Resource Group, Iona Community Members, Associates or Friends.

Starting at 6.00pm, each liturgy will usually last around 45 – 60 minutes. On many Wednesday evenings the service will be followed by other events or workshops, usually starting at 7.00pm. Of course, we hope you might be interested in some of these too.

A note on Prayers for Healing

Often (though not always), this liturgy will contain two parts.

The first is a time of prayer when names of people who require prayer can be mentioned.

In the second half, the act of laying on of hands may be offered to those present who wish to receive it … either for themselves, someone they know or a situation for which they have concern.

In this action, while the leaders of worship will lay hands on the head or shoulder of those who come forward to kneel and receive this ministry, all others who wish to can participate similarly by laying their hand on the person’s shoulder, or on the shoulder of those gathered around. In this way, a web of caring communal touch encompasses each person.

This action, the gift of human touch, is not the skill or preserve of specially trained or charismatic individuals, but of the whole people of God. We believe that it is a communal gift of compassion and we do it because it was one of the last commands of Jesus to his disciples before his ascension.
