Current Staff Vacancies - Iona Centres

GatheringBeing part of the Resident Group at the Island Centres is not simply taking on a job - it is taking on a way of life, sharing in the Community's ministry of hospitality and a common life of work and worship.

Resident Group Members take on specific responsibilities for the running of certain functions within the Community, which encompass a range of skills and experience. 

Please see the vacancies below.  The posts of Resident Staff Coordinator, Volunteer Staff Coordinator, and Resident Cook will be filled during this programme year.  The posts of Hospitality Team Support Worker, Housekeepers, Sacristan and Craft Worker are being recruited for the next programme year.  Staff arrive at the end of January to be ready to begin a month long staff induction and training. 

All interviews will be held via SKYPE, and applicants will need a skype account, and access to a computer with microphone and camera.

CURRENT OPENINGS

Resident Staff Coordinator: 3 year post

The Resident Staff Coordinator will facilitate the recruitment and selection process for appointment of Resident Group Staff.  The post holder will plan and coordinate the annual staff induction and training.  The post holder will support, monitor and continue in the development of line management systems.  The post holder will work to ensure that the community remains in compliance with employment legislation.

Volunteer Staff Coordinator: 3 year post

The Volunteer Staff Coordinator will facilitate the recruitment and selection process for appointment of the Volunteer Staff.  The post holder will oversee the recruitment process, and ensure the well-being of the volunteer staff once here by organizing social events and regular reflection times.  The post holder will work as part of the Staffing team, and will be required to have flexibility in their approach to their work.

Resident Cook: 1 year post initially with an opportunity to extend for an additional 2 years

The Resident Cook is responsible for managing a team of voluntary staff, providing meals for the staff and guests in the MacLeod Centre from March to November and in the Abbey from November to March. The post holder works closely with the Hospitality Team Leader in planning meals, ordering supplies and keeping within the allocated budget. Catering at the Centres provides a staple, healthy option diet which is predominately vegetarian, and attempts to be environmentally friendly (i.e. avoiding waste), ecologically sustainable, sensitive to tastes and providing for special dietary requirements.

OPENINGS FOR THE 2011 SEASON

Sacristan: 1 year seasonal post, ending mid-November 2011

The Sacristan is responsible for the stewardship and caretaking of the Abbey Church, the Michael Chapel and St Oran’s Chapel, and for ensuring that all the necessary preparations are made to enable the conduct of public worship. The Sacristan is also responsible for supervising the volunteer staff attached to the Abbey Church.  As a part of the programme team, the Sacristan assists with the delivery of the guest programme for the Abbey and MacLeod Centres.

Housekeeper: 1 year seasonal post, ending mid-November in the MacLeod Centre, and 31 December in the Abbey.

The Housekeeper is responsible for heading a team of voluntary staff, who prepares the Centres for incoming guests, and keeps the Centres tidy while the guests stay. The Housekeeper works closely with the Hospitality Team Coordinator in ordering supplies of cleaning materials and table supplies, maintaining equipment and keeping within the allocated budget.  It is essential that the post holder has a flexible approach to their work, as it is sometimes necessary to work outside the normally designated hours.

There are two Housekeeper posts open for 2011.

Hospitality Team Support Worker: 1 year seasonal post, ending 31 December 2011

The Hospitality Team Support Worker works with the Hospitality Team supporting the domestic work of both centres. The role involves developing a familiarity and competence with tasks relating to cooking and housekeeping. This allows the Hospitality Team Support Worker to cover or formally deputise for colleagues, as well as to contribute to the general staff complement of the Hospitality Team. It is essential that the post holder has a flexible approach to their work.

Craft and Programme Worker: 1 year seasonal post, ending mid-November 2011

The Craft and Programme Worker enables guests, volunteers and resident staff to engage with their own God-given creativity. This is done through organised craft sessions, exploring a particular craft or a theme, and through open, informal sessions in the Craft Room. Through creative arts and crafts, guests and staff are encouraged to reflect on their place in the wider community and in work for peace, justice and the integrity of creation. In common with the rest of the Programme Team, the Craft and Programme Worker participates in team meetings and supports the complete programme.

Iona & Camas Resident Group based posts:

Resident Group posts are generally offered on a fixed term basis of between 10 months and 3 years. All posts regardless of the duties are offered at the same monthly allowance, plus full board and lodgings, and relocation assistance. A holiday allowance is also offered depending on the lenght of appointment as well as a generous pension provision. 

We ask that applicants be in sympathy with the aims and purposed of the Iona Community and recognise that living in community is not simply doing a job but sharing in common life responsibilities which includes welcoming guests, building community and daily worship where appropriate. 

Notes for applicants for Iona & Camas Resident Group posts:

  • Applications must be made using the Iona Community's application form. We regret that CVs will not be accepted without a fully completed application form, stating clearly which post/s you are interested in.
  • All Iona & Camas Resident Group posts are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and appointments will be subject to satisfactory Criminal Records Office check. Having a criminal record however will not exclude anyone from applying, or being considered for appointment.
  • Applicants who do not hold UK or EC citizenship, or are not otherwise entitled to residency/working rights in the UK, will require visa clearance for employment in the UK. You should check your entitlement for entry clearance with your local British Consulate prior to making your application.
  • Applicants based outside of the UK please note: If short listed for interview we are able to pay travel expenses from point of entry into the UK only.

 




VolliesWe also have a variety of VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES for men and women aged 18 to post-retirement. Placements of 6 weeks & longer are available between March and December each year. Please let us know if you are interested in our 2010 volunteer programme.
