WWBOX: The Three Marys in The Gospel Tradition (Urban Retreat)

24 November 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 25 November 2017 @ 4:00 pm

Three Marys in art reproduction, event title and image odf Padraig O Tuama's eyes

Looking at the gospel stories through the stories of three women: Mary of Bethany, Mary of Nazareth, Mary of Magdala

The three Marys have been characters upon whom Christianity has long hung archetypes: Virgin, Bossy, Prostitute.

During this urban retreat, Pádraig Ó Tuama will help us explore the stories of these extraordinary women in the texts, in our own lives and in poetry, reckoning with the richness of their characters and reflecting on the need to archetype powerful women characters of the gospel tradition.

Come prepared to read stories in new ways, to blush a little, and to make friendships with new people and with the three Marys.

Over the last 7 years, we’ve collaborated with Pádraig in offering this urban retreat series at Advent in Glasgow’s city centre. This is the now the 8th glorious occasion.

About Pádraig

Pádraig Ó Tuama is leader of the Corrymeela Community, as well as being a poet, theologian and peaceworker. Hailing from Cork on the south coast of Ireland, he now lives in Belfast, where he has used elements of faith, poetry, hope and truth-telling for the purpose of helping individuals tell some of their experiences of living through the Irish and other conflict situations in a way that builds curiosity and connections through simple story.

Pádraig uses skills in poetry, theology and mediation to nurture connections where fruitless and predictable arguments can be transformed into dignified and dignifying human encounters. His poetry explores the meaningful in the everyday, as well as putting some words to the wordlessness of meaninglessness. Seeking to give small lenses into everyday experiences of loneliness, hope, exile and joy, his poems are accessible and powerful. Both on the written page and in his compelling performances, his poems speak of big truths by telling small stories of humanity.

His published collections include ‘In the Shelter’ (Hodder & Stoughton/ Hachette Ireland, 2015), ‘Sorry for your Troubles’ (Canterbury Press, 2013), ‘Readings from the Books of Exile’ (Canterbury Press, 2012), ‘Human in the City’ and 12 poems, Discovering the Spirit in the City’ (Continuum, 2010).
