A week for all families

Every year, since the earliest days of the Iona Community, young people and families have journeyed to Iona.

Families of all shapes and sizes, grandparents and babies, honorary aunties and reluctant teenagers come to the Abbey to live in community. They tell us that they come to make memories, to get to know each other and to make the world better. It’s a time of deep sharing for adults, and a time of great fun for young people. Adults who bring their children to Iona often tell us that the time together makes a big impact on their relationships.

“I’m grateful Iona made this experience with my family available and so meaningful. Thank you for the opportunity to come and bring our children.” Parent 2024

Our guest families have the opportunity to enjoy together the time and space that island life affords. They take part in the daily rhythm of life which includes: daily worship, shared meals and tasks, and lots of fun. Each day offers activities such as day trips to Staffa, beach adventures, an island pilgrimage, talent-filled ceilidh and musical ping pong.  And often, the trip confounds even the most cynical young person’s expectations!

“I just want to say that coming here was the best decision even though I didn’t want to come at first.”
Young guest, 2024

Sharing a passion for justice

The Iona Community has a passion for social justice. And we love sharing our commitment to the world with guest of all ages. Each week, we learn, act and pray for big issues such as the climate crisis, racism, war and gender injustice. We explore the importance of sharing God’s generous love with all.

“This was quite honestly one of the best weeks of my life. I gained so much clarity and insight into both my life and the world around me, and I really hope to return.“ Young guest 2024

Room at the table for all the family

We are convinced that communities are not just the stuff of dreams. They are radical, inclusive spaces where everyone belongs and everyone has the potential to change the world. And that includes you and your unique family.

‘Come and trust who God says you are. Come and join what God’s Spirit is doing. Come and live and love like Jesus. There are more seats at the table and you, dear friend – you Belong.’
